While ElleRate celebrates all women-elevating initiatives, our focus is on advancing economic empowerment by helping women channel the enormous spending power we already possess to shape the world we want to live in. Proportionate representation and implementation of women’s voices and choices into innovation and policy is nothing short of critical to the health of local, national, and global communities and economies.
What is women’s economic empowerment?
The United Nations defines women’s economic empowerment as “women’s capacity to participate in, contribute to, and benefit from growth processes in ways which recognize the value of their contributions, respect their dignity, and make it possible to negotiate a fairer distribution of the benefits of growth.
“[It] includes women’s ability to participate equally in existing markets; their access to and control over productive resources, access to decent work, control over their own time, lives and bodies; and increased voice, agency and meaningful participation in economic decision-making at all levels from the household to international institutions.”
